A Delhi Police inspector, the in-charge of North-West Delhi’s Bhalswa Dairy police station, died due to dengue on Saturday. Inspector Om Prakash was admitted to Max Hospital in Shalimar Bagh on Monday after he complained of fever and uneasiness.
With his death, the toll due to dengue in the city now stands at 41.
The 44-year-old, posted as Station House Officer (SHO) of Bhalswa Dairy police station, had joined the station just two days ago after being transferred from Delhi Police Special Branch, where he served for six years. He is survived by his wife and two sons, who stay in South-West Delhi’s Najafgarh.
Om Prakash hailed from Haryana and had joined Delhi Police in 1994 as Sub-Inspector. He got promoted as Inspector in 2009.
According to a senior police officer, Om Prakash was suffering from fever but continued to come to office. On Friday evening at his police station, he complained of uneasiness. The staff members present there took him to the hospital. He was admitted there after being diagnosed.
“He was kept under observation but succumbed to the illness during treatment,” said the officer.
Om Prakash is the second policeman to die in the Capital because of the deadly disease, which has taken 9,438 people in the city under its grip. A constable from Uttarakhand, who was undergoing treatment at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, died due to dengue on October 7.
The deceased was posted in Haldwani and referred from Bareilly-based Shri Ram Murti Smarak Institute of Medical Sciences after developing dengue-related complications, said hospital sources.

The dengue outbreak this year has become the worst in the last six years, having surpassed the 2010 figure for the total number of cases (6,259) by the end of the last month.
Out of the total number of cases reported till today, September alone has seen 6,775 cases, also the highest in the last six years.
