A Hurriyat leader was shot dead inside his house by unknown gunmen in south Kashmir's Anantnag. His wife was also injured in the attack.

Preliminary reports suggest unknown gunmen raided the house of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat district president, Anantnag, Hafizullah Mir at Badru-Akingam area of Achabal, Anantnag, on Tuesday morning.

Mir was shot in the chest and abdomen. He was declared ‘dead on arrival’ by the doctors at the local hospital, said the police.

"His wife was also injured in the attack and has been hospitalised," said the police.

Mir, affiliated to the Hurriyat faction headed Syed Ali Geelani, was released from jail in October after a two-year detention. The Hurriyat claimed Mir was being threatened on the phone by unknown men.
