June 17, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:42 am IST - Chandigarh:

The Haryana Government would soon announce a new policy to improve transport services in the State.

“The policy is being finalised in consultation with seven employee unions of the State transport sector,” Haryana Transport Minister Ram Bilas Sharma told reporters here on Tuesday.

He said that the transport policy is expected to be announced within the next 15 days.

In order to improve the services, 1,000 new drivers would also be recruited, he said, adding, during the current fiscal year, about 1,000 new buses would be added to the State roadways fleet, increasing their number to 5,100.

Mr. Sharma said that new buses would have GPS system so that their location could be easily traced. He added that the State is also considering operating buses under the kilometre scheme as is being done in neighbouring Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.

Under the scheme in the neighbouring States, the buses and drivers are provided by the owners while the conductors are provided by the State roadways, Mr. Sharma said, adding, if the proposal gets through, the conductors would be provided in Haryana Roadways.

First-time drivers recruited on contract basis would be given monthly honorarium of Rs.12,000 which was earlier Rs.8,000, he said.
