An encounter has erupted in north Kashmir's Sopore where militants fired upon a search party of security forces on Thursday night.

Security forces came under fire at Astan Mohalla of Warpora area of Sopore of Baramulla district, an official said.

"The area was placed under a cordon on Thursday afternoon and a search was on in the area when the hiding militants opened fire," said the police.

Initial reports suggest two to three militants may be hiding in the area.

Officials said lights were installed in the area so that militants do not escape from the cordoned off area.
