Gujjar stir: breakthrough likely today

Jaipur-Kota road also blocked

The Gujjar community’s agitation in Rajasthan for 5% reservation in government jobs and education entered its fifth day on Tuesday, with the unrest growing in size and intensity and one more major road, connecting Jaipur to Kota, being blocked at Chaksu town.

As Gujjars continued to occupy the Delhi-Mumbai railway tracks, North Western Railway cancelled three trains and diverted two others. There were indications of a breakthrough by Wednesday, as the State Cabinet mulled over the options of bringing a Bill on the subject or adopting a resolution in the State Assembly’s ongoing budget session recommending urgent action by the Union government for giving quota to Gujjars.

Minister of State for Youth Affairs Ashok Chandna said a “major decision” could be taken by Wednesday to end the agitation. “A decision is being finalised,” he added.
