Protesting against the opening up of retail sector for foreign direct investment, activists of Swadeshi Jagran Manch on Monday burnt an effigy of Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee at Krishnapuria Chatri here.

Led by SJM’s district leader, Mahesh Paliwal, the protesters shouted anti-UPA slogans.

Mr. Paliwal said SJM would support the nation-wide bandh against retail sector FDI on December 1.

Meanwhile, district Congress president Pramod Tandon said BJP and its frontal organisations including Swadeshi Jagran Manch should first oppose Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s decision to allow `Best Prices’ shop, which has collaborated with Wallmart, in the State.

“FDI in retail will certainly benefit the Indian market,” Mr. Tandon said.
