Five youths were killed and one seriously injured when their car hit a stationary truck on the national highway near Kendrapara on Monday morning.

All the five victims, aged below 25 years, were returning after watching a cultural programme at Tinimuhani when the accident took place at 2 a.m.

The crash left the car badly mangled and the bodies had to be extricated from the vehicle by using gas cutters, Inspector of Derabish police station Sudhir Kumar Sahu said.

The youths succumbed to injuries while being taken to a hospital. The injured youth was rushed to SCB Medical College Hospital, Cuttack.

Meanwhile, the State government has come up with an amendment to the Odisha Motor Vehicles (Accident Claims Tribunal) Rules, 1960, empowering the departments to recover compensation from registered owner of vehicle which is not covered by policy of insurance against third party risks.
