All eight trekkers who were caught in heavy snowfall in Chandrakhani Pass at the height of 3,660 meters are safe and are being evacuated to Kullu.
The student trekkers from Longowal Engineering Institute of Punjab were traced on Sunday by administration’s helicopter after the weather cleared towards the evening. Six of the trekkers were brought down in the first sortie and the rest two would also be evacuated soon, said an official spokesman. The trekkers who had taken refuge in a nearby cave remained safe for three days despite of snow and a bad weather outside.
The eight engineering students, four of them from Himachal, had come for trekking from Sangrur in Punjab on March 8. They made the last contact with the police on March 11 about losing the trek near Chandrakhani. Continuous rain and snow and extreme fog in the region posed problem for the disaster management teams to locate them on the mountain pass.
Chandrakhani Pass is located in the Kullu District of Himachal Pradesh. It forms a way (pass) between Rumsu and Pulag to the well known village of Malana.
