The Madhya Pradesh Lokayukta police caught a senior government doctor red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs.5000 to treat a cancer patient on Saturday here.
The Special Police Establishment (SPE) of the State Lokayukta arrested Dr. S.K.Pippal, head of department of the ENT unit at the government-run Hamidia hospital, for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs. 5000 from the brother of an oral-cancer patient.
The State department of medical education will reportedly be initiating proceedings for the doctor's suspension.
It all started when Kailash (32), a resident of Rajgarh distirct, approached the Lokayukta Police, claiming Dr. Pippal had demanded Rs.10000 from him to operate his brother Ramesh. Ramesh, who was suffering from an advanced stage of oral cancer, was admitted to the Hamidia hospital on 15 February.
The Lokayukta police intercepted and recorded the complainant's telephone conversations with the doctor who asked him for a bribe of Rs.10000, failing which he threatened to discharge Ramesh.
Dr. Pippal finally agreed to operate the patient for Rs. 5000.
The Lokayukta police then asked Kailash to meet the doctor at his posh-Idgah hills official residence for the payoff, with a colour-laced Rs. 5000, and arrested the doctor red-handed accepting the bribe.
