Former CM of Madhya Pradesh and Congress General Secretary Digvijaya Singh spoke out against former union minister Mani Shankar Aiyar’s remarks against the BJP’s PM hopeful Narendra Modi, at his residence in Bhopal on Monday.

Mr. Singh said that it was inappropriate of Mr. Aiyar to say that Mr. Modi was only fit to sell tea and not to become PM. He said, “His comments were inappropriate and I do not agree with him. The biggest strength of our democracy is that all citizens irrespective of their caste, creed or profession can become PM, CM or the President.”

At the All India Congress Committee meeting on Saturday, Mr. Aiyar said, “I promise you in 21st Century Narendra Modi will never become the Prime Minister of the country. ...But if he wants to distribute tea here, we will find a place for him.”

He has been widely criticized for this on social media and his office in Mayiladuthurai was stoned. The Congress has formally distance itself from his comments, while Mr. Aiyar blamed Modi for initiating personal attacks on opponents.
