Army jawans take position at the spot of an ambush by militants at Achabal Chowk in Anantnag district of Kashmir on July 13, 2018. A CRPF officer and a jawan were killed in the encounter.

A CRPF officer and a jawan were killed and two others were injured as militants ambushed their patrol in Anantnag’s Achabal area on Friday. One civilian was also injured.

Initial reports suggest that the militants opened indiscriminate fire on the patrol at Achabal. The deceased CRPF officer was identified as Assistant Sub-inspector M.L. Meena.

“The injured CRPF jawans were shifted to the Army’s 92 base hospital Badamibagh, Srinagar,” said an official.

Security forces’ reinforcements were dispatched to the spot of the attack. An operation was launched to nab the attackers.

The attack comes on a day when people in the State were observing ‘Martyrs Day’ in commemoration of the civilians killed in 1931 in an uprising against the Dogra monarchy.
