Suspected militants shot dead a civilian and injured his wife on Friday night in north Kashmir's Sopore.

A police spokesman said militants entered into the residential house of Mohammad Ashraf Mir (35) at Harwan in Sopore's Bomai and "fired upon him and his wife".

"Both were injured critically in this incident and were evacuated to Sub-District Hospital, Sopore. However Mir succumbed to his injuries," said the police spokesman.

Mir was a driver by profession. "The victim had received a bullet injury in his chest," said the police.

The victim's wife, Saima (32) was also shot in both the legs. "Saima was to a Srinagar hospital for specialized treatment," said the police.

The police could not immediately ascertain the cause of the attack. "The police have started the investigation," said the police.
