: Depositors, who were duped by chit fund companies, organized a rally in the city and a demonstration in front of the office of Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC), southern division demanding the return of their deposited money.

This rally and demonstration had been called by ‘Chit fund Khyatigrasta Jamakari Sangh (CKJS). Conned depositors from Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Boudh, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi and Malkangiri took part in this demonstration. They handed over a memorandum addressed to the Odisha Chief Minister at the office of the RDC. Through the memorandum they demanded asked the State government to make arrangements so that the process of return of money to duped depositors could start by July 15. The CKJS has decided to hold a protest in front of all tehsil offices in the State if the State government fails to take any decision in this regard till then, said adviser of the organization B.C. Sarangi.

It may be noted that the State government has already taken a decision for formation of a corpus fund worth 300 crore rupees for return of money to duped depositors. A judicial commission is also enquiring into the chit fund scam of Odisha.

The duped depositors had four demands before the government. The CKJS asked the government to come up with a strong law to end nefarious activities of dubious financial firms or chit fund companies. “Otherwise the government should become guarantor of all depositors who invest in these firms allowed to operate by the government,” they said.

They demanded identification and documentation of conned depositors at tehsil level so that no one gets left out. They wanted confiscation of properties of dubious finance and chit fund firms and their auctioning so that the same money could be returned to the depositors.
