Bid to dump garbage outside summit foiled

October 29, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:39 am IST - NEW DELHI:

A convoy of sanitation workers carrying sacks of garbage were apprehended by the police on Wednesday en route to the venue of the India-Africa Forum Summit, where the protesters were planning to dump trash.

The municipal sanitation workers, who have been on strike since October 23, had planned to dump garbage outside the Indira Gandhi stadium to get attention for their demands. About 100 workers congregated at Ambedkar Stadium on Wednesday morning before making their way towards the summit. They were stopped near Rajghat and nine of them were taken to the Rajendra Nagar police station. A senior police officer said the workers were detained under provisions of the Delhi Police Act, but no case was lodged against them.
