Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Nilesh Cabral on Wednesday threatened to sit on a dharna if culprits behind the mass desecration at a cemetery in Curchorem village are not arrested before the end of upcoming Monsoon session of the Goa legislative assembly.
"These desecrations are a threat to my government. Police have to act quickly and arrest those responsible for the desecration or else I will sit on dharna outside the Curchorem police station before the assembly session ends", said Mr. Cabral, an MLA from Curchorem constituency.
"I will also be raising this issue in the assembly session. Police needs to modernise in order to catch such culprits," Mr. Cabral, who is also the chairman of State-owned goa tourism Corporation Limited said.
State legislative assembly monsoon session is scheduled to begin on July 18.
Mr. Cabral's statement comes in wake of a series of desecration of Catholic and Hindu religious symbols, including the incident earlier this week when several Catholic crosses were smashed and grave-stones broken at a cemetery in South Goa's Curchorem town.
The Goa Archbishop, as well as Governor Mridula Sinha on Tuesday had urged the state police to effectively probe the desecration series.
Mr. Cabral also proposed to take up the matter with Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar who is presently away in the U.S. on a personal visit and is scheduled to be back on July 14.
