Soldier killed on LoC in Poonch

A soldier was killed on the Line of Control (LoC) in a ceasefire violation of Pakistan in the Pir Panjal valley’s Poonch district on Thursday. Meanwhile, J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha chaired a meeting of the Unified High Command, comprising top security officials, on measures to curb militancy.

An official said a soldier, identified as Hawaldar Nirmal Singh from the Army’s 10 JAK Rifle, sustained bullet injuries in the chest after Paksitan resorted to sniper fire on forward posts in Poonch’s Mankote area.

“Singh was immediately shifted in a chopper to the Udhampur hospital. However, the soldier died on the way,” the official said.

An Army spokesman said the Pakistan army resorted to “unprovoked ceasefire violation in Krishna Ghati Sector”. “The Indian Army responded strongly,” he added.

He said Havaldar Singh was a brave, highly motivated and a sincere soldier. “The nation will always remain indebted to him for his supreme sacrifice and devotion to duty,” the spokesman said.

L-G reviews J&K security

Infiltration from across the LoC and militancy in mainland Kashmir on Thursday dominated the meeting of Unified High Command chaired by Lieutenant Governor Sinha in Jammu.

An official said the security top brass apprised the L-G about the preparedness and measures under way to tackle infiltration and dissuade locals from joining the militants.

“The review meeting took stock of the prevailing security scenario and discussed strategy to be adopted for the upcoming summer,” official sources said.

The meeting was attended by senior officials of the police, the Army, the CRPF, the BSF and intelligence agencies.
