Six armed men reportedly looted ₹1.33 crore on Tuesday from the cash van of a private bank in Banur town of Patiala, after shooting at the driver and injuring him, the police said.
“The hunt for the culprits is on. An alert has been sounded across the State. We have also alerted Haryana and Uttar Pradesh authorities as well,” Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) S. Boopathi told The Hindu .
According to the police around six unidentified men robbed the cash-loaded van after intercepting it on the Patiala-Zirakpur Highway in Banur town. The van was on its way from Chandigarh to distribute cash to local branches of the bank at Banur and Rajpura.
“Preliminary investigation showed that they (the accused) fired shots at the driver, leaving him injured and then made away with ₹1.33 crore,” said Mr. Boopathi. The driver, who sustained serious injuries, has been hospitalised and his condition is said to be critical.

“We are probing the matter from all angles. The police are scanning the CCTV footage, and are also trying to prepare sketches on the basis of information from people who were witness to the crime,” he added.
