Appointment of Amit Shah as BJP chief flayed

July 11, 2014 01:12 pm | Updated April 22, 2016 12:54 am IST - KOLKATA:

Days after the BJP named Amit Shah as party president, State Left Front chairperson Biman Basu criticised the saffron party for offering such a post to someone who is under trial in a ‘fake encounter case’. Even though he admitted that the development is an ‘internal matter’ of the BJP, Mr. Basu said that the decision has ‘brought the BJP’s view point to the forefront’.

He pointed out that during the general elections campaign, Mr. Shah was barred by the Election Commission from campaigning in Uttar Pradesh for delivering communal speeches there. Mr. Basu alleged that Mr. Shah tried to spread communal violence in Muzaffarnagar. Mr. Shah, a former Home Minister of Gujarat, is one among those mentioned in the CBI charge-sheet in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case.

Mr. Basu also said that if BJP leader Kalyan Singh is appointed as the Governor of West Bengal then the Left Front will strongly oppose it.
