Commander Dilip Dhonde of Maharashtra has been decorated with Shaurya Chakra for becoming the first Indian to undertake a solo circumnavigation of the globe.
According to a release from the Defence Wing of the Press Information Bureau on Monday, Commander Donde undertook “Sagar Parikrama” on Indian Naval Sailing Vessel Mhadei.
The Shaurya Chakra is a military decoration awarded for valour, courageous action or self-sacrifice while not being engaged in direct action with the enemy. It is the peace-time equivalent of the Vir Chankra and is third in the order of precedence of peace-time gallantry awards. The Ashok Chakra is first in the order, followed by the Kirti Chakra.
