An alleged CPI(M) supporter was arrested on Thursday in connection with the killing of seven unarmed persons on January 7 at Netai village in West Midnapore district.

A senior district police officer on Thursday said that Ajit Hembram was arrested from Belatikri village in the Lalgarh area this morning. Two persons had earlier been arrested in this connection.

The officer said that after interrogating him, a hand cannon was seized from the village.

Asked if the CPI(M) was involved in the carnage, the officer said, “Interrogation is going on and we cannot divulge the details now.”

Suspected CPI(M) cadres indiscriminately fired from a house, allegedly camping there with arms, on an agitated crowd at Netai village, killing seven persons and injuring scores on January seven.
