Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has asked the Army and other security forces to ensure that incidents like the killing on Friday of a youth in an Army ambush did not recur and exercise utmost caution while dealing with the militancy.

After a meeting with General Officer Commanding of the Srinagar-based 15 Corps Lt. Gen. S.A. Hasnain here on Sunday, Mr. Abdullah told The Hindu that the situation was reviewed after the killing of the 21-year-old in Handwara.

The meeting was also attended by Director-General of Police Kuldip Khoda, Inspector-General of Police S.M. Sahai and other officials.

The killing has jolted the State government, which has been battling to maintain the peace in the Kashmir Valley after six months of unrest last year. To prevent the separatists from exploiting the killing, Mr. Abdullah acted swiftly, rushing to Handwara to console the family. “I went to Handwara, apologised to the family and shared their grief,” he said.
