Kalavati may not contest elections

With the storm around the nomination of Kalavati Bandurkar refusing to die down, there is likelihood that she may not contest the coming Maharashtra Assembly elections. However, she filed her nomination on Friday.

Kishore Tiwari of the Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti, at whose behest Ms. Kalavati agreed to step in the arena, told The Hindu that the stress due to incessant media interviews and pressure from Congress supporters at home and in her village have taken a toll on her health. She had to be admitted to hospital and was under observation. “She has returned home, but she is really unwell. She had to be taken to file the nomination in an ambulance.”

Mr. Tiwari and Bebi Bai, another crisis-hit woman like Ms. Kalavati, filed their nominations along with Ms. Kalavati for the Wani seat. “If the pressure gets too much and Ms. Kalavati decides to step down, either Ms. Bebi Bai or I will contest,” Mr. Tiwari said.

Peasants and Workers Party leader Jayant Patil has said he would give Rs.5 lakh to Ms. Kalavati to fight the election.
