Drivers in Jammu and Kashmir beware! The Traffic Police will not only fine those talking on their mobiles while driving but also seize the instrument as evidence.
“Traffic police will not only challan the offender but also seize the phone as mark of evidence to be presented in court,” a police spokesman said here on Sunday.
He said that despite a record collection of more than Rs. 2 crore in fines from traffic offenders last year, there has been no decrease in offences and police have decided to “act tough” on errant drivers.
“There has been as much as 80 per cent increase in the challan money as compared to previous year, but the number of offences and accidents have not come down. We will now act tough against those violating traffic rules,” he said.
The force collected Rs. 2,85,78,790 as fines for traffic offences in 2009, of which Rs. 1.48 crore was realised from the city itself.
A cycle rally was also organised here today as part of ’Road Safety Week’.
The spokesman said 50 volunteers of the Red Cross displaying the ‘Dos and Donts’ for safe driving’ completed the 13 km rally which started from Ram Munshi Bagh and culminated at Nishat garden.
