Bansal’s help sought on SYL canal project

Haryana on Saturday urged Union Water Resources Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal to take up the Presidential reference made to the Supreme Court about the Termination of Agreements Act and also get completed the remaining portion of the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal in Punjab territory at the earliest.

Haryana Irrigation Minister Ajay Singh Yadav called on Mr. Bansal in New Delhi to discuss various issues concerning the State, according to an official release issued here.

Capt. Yadav raised the issue of Shahpur Kandi Dam project which has been declared a national project by the Centre. Mr. Bansal said he would ensure that Punjab complies with the conditions laid down by the Planning Commission.

The Union Minister also assured Haryana that he would try to get the work on all three dams on the Yamuna speeded up.

Capt. Yadav also sought Mr. Bansal’s intervention over the BML-Hansi Butana Multi purpose Link Canal which is being constructed by Haryana to carry its own share of Ravi-Beas water to arid areas and for equitable distribution of available water in the State. He said Haryana is ready to hand over control of the head regulator of this canal to the Bhakra Beas Management Board to ensure that the water shares of Punjab and Rajasthan from the BML Canal are ensured.
