Assam assembly soon to have an upper house

The Assam assembly will soon turn bicameral with the induction of an upper house.

In a resolution passed on Saturday night in the State assembly in Guwahati, the House unanimously adopted a resolution for setting up a legislative council or the upper house.

The resolution decided to recommend the same to the Centre for moving Parliament to formulate laws in this regard.

Moving the resolution, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Bharat Chandra Narah said Parliament will soon be approached for the passage of a bill required to set up the legislative council.

All the legislators cutting across party lines supported the legislation which was unanimously passed.

The proposed legislative council will consist of 42 members.
