On the heels of the Adarsh Society scam, there is another scandal, alleges the National Alliance of People's Movements (NAPM), saying another piece of defence land was “being usurped'' by builders/developers in Mumbai.
Seeks CBI probe
Seeking a CBI probe into permission given by the Maharashtra government to a developer under the Slum Rehabilitation Scheme on prime land, NAPM convener Medha Patkar on Wednesday said thousands of families had been thus cheated and were facing demolition of their 70-100-year-old houses at Khar-Santa Cruz.
Addressing a press conference here, she said: “Whether it is the land of rural and tribal population in the Narmada valley or the land of decades-old societies in urban areas in Mumbai, land is up for grabs by the so-called developers and builders in connivance with politicians.”
“Most of the 46 societies on 125 acres of land for which the builder has been given permission for re-development are on state land, private land as well as land belonging to the Ministry of Defence in Mumbai. The fictitiously termed developer had proposed a township project by demolishing these old societies which was supported by the then Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh.”
Based on information received under the Right to Information Act, Ms. Patkar said the various documents with the NAPM clearly brought out that the defence land was being usurped.
