At least 12 people from Maharashtra were killed and two seriously injured in two separate road accidents, one in Nashik district, and the other on the Pune-Solapur highway in neighbouring Karnataka on Wednesday morning.
According to the police, six members of a family who were returning from Indore, including three women and a minor, were killed on the spot following a collision between a private vehicle and a tempo truck in Nashik’s Yeola taluk.
The mishap took place at Ankai along the Yeola-Manmad road at around 5 a.m., leading to a major traffic snarl on the busy road.
“Six members of a family travelling in a Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, including a senior citizen, his wife, son, daughter, daughter in-law and their grandson died on the spot due to the impact of the crash. The driver of the Eicher tempo truck has been moved to a nearby hospital, and is critical,” said a police official, adding that the process of identifying the bodies was on.
In another incident, six labourers from Pune, travelling to work in neighbouring Karnataka, lost their lives when their vehicle hit a truck near Honaganahalli village in Vijayapura district.
One person in the group is said to be critical. The labourers were construction workers and were travelling in a Bolero utility vehicle when the accident occurred along the Pune-Solapur highway on Wednesday morning.
The cause of the mishap was yet to be ascertained, said authorities, adding that a complaint had been registered at the Bableshwar police station in Vijayapura.
