The Missionaries of Charity has decided to discontinue all adoption work in India, a statement issued by the organisation, set up by Mother Teresa, said here on Saturday.
The announcement comes in the wake of revised guidelines of adoption issued by Ministry of Women and Children Development where it has stripped adoption centres of the right to approve or reject prospective adoptive parents.
The decision was arrived at by the organisation’s headquarters in Kolkata, “soon after we received the new Guidelines Governing Adoption of Children, 2015.’’ The Missionaries of Charity is opposed to giving children up for adoption by single parents. Such a practice is against its faith, it says.
“If we were to continue the work set up by Mother Teresa, complying with all the provisions would have been difficult for us,” the statement, issued in the name of the organisation spokesperson Sunita Kumar, said.
Speaking to The Hindu from London, Ms. Kumar said that since August 15, 2015 the organisation has decided to discontinue all adoption work in India.
