When the Babri Masjid was demolished, it was not just the mosque that came down, but it was direct attack on the Constitution of India, Opposition leader Sharad Yadav said on Monday.

The Loktantrik Janata Dal leader was speaking at the Samvidhan Samman Samaroh (My Pride-My constitution) organised by the Congress.

Speaking about the growing cry for a Ram temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya by the Sangh Parivar groups, Mr. Yadav said: “When they demolished the Babri Masjid, it was not just the structure of the mosque that was brought down, they also brought down our country’s Constitution.”

CPI MP D. Raja, who also spoke at the event, said the present government was trying to bring in a theocratic state. “B.R. Ambedkar worked hard to keep theocracy at bay. He ensured that India was a republic and remained secular. Now we are faced with the challenge to protect the Constitution. They want subvert the Constitution and replace it with a theocracy,” he said.
