The first day of the extended winter session of Parliament saw little business being transacted in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday as members from Andhra Pradesh disrupted the proceedings.
The highlight, however, was the House passing a unanimous resolution to condemn the killing of Nido Tania from Arunachal Pradesh, and discrimination against students from the northeast. “The entire House condemns the death of the young boy. A clear message should go to the entire country that Parliament wants all people and children from the northeast are protected,” Speaker Meira Kumar said.
Nido died after having been beaten up allegedly by shopkeepers following an argument over his hairstyle. Raising the matter during zero hour, Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj said: “We must address the bias against the northeastern community. We must demand protection for these students. Students from the northeast are forced to migrate because of underdevelopment in their States.”
