Youth Festival: V S to open valedictory meet on Sunday

It was a day of dance and music on the fourth day of the Mahatma Gandhi University Union youth festival in the Central Travancore town of Thiruvalla on Saturday.

With the announcement of results of cultural contests in 31 items on Saturday evening, St Teresa’s College, Ernakulam, with 50 points was leading, leaving behind the Sacred Heart College at Thevara in Ernakulam district with 35 points at the second position.

RLV College of Music and Fine Arts, Tripunithura (32 points) and St Berchman’s College, Changanacherry (23 points) were in the third and fourth position respectively. Maharajah’s College, Ernakulam, and St Albert’s College, Ernakulam, were at the fifth place bagging 22 points each.

Bharathanatyam

Bharathanatyam for boys held at the Dr Sukumar Azhikode Nagar (Public Stadium) was the competition that had attracted the lowest number of participants in this year’s youth festival.

Though a total of 27 students have registered for the competition, only six of them turned up for performance. All the six performers maintained very good standard, according to the judges. The ‘Sankarabharanam’ movie fame Manju Bhargavi who was among the three judges.

The competition that was scheduled to start at 9 am had begun only at 12 noon because of the lukewarm response from a majority of the persons registered for the item.

Sen Jensen.T.F from SH College, Thevara, stood first in he Bharathanatyam contest. Mr Jensen says dance, especially classical dance, has been his passion from the school days. He has bagged first prize in Bharathanatyam, Kuchippudi, Otranthual and folk dance at the schools’ youth festival held in Ernakulam in 2008.

The first prize-winners in various competitions held on Saturday are:

Fancy dress: Chitralekha.S of St Thomas College, Ranni.

Elocution (Hindi): Veena Viswanath Bhandari of St Teresa’s College, Ernakulam.

Film Review: Sreejith R.S of University Colege of Teacher Education, Eerattupetta.

Bharathanatyam (Male): San Jensen T.F of Sacred Heart College, Thevara.

Light music (Vocal Indian - Male): Pranav Mohan of St Joseph’s College of Communication, Changanacherry.

Mono-act: Lakshmi Jyoti V of RLV College of Music and Fine Arts, Tripunithura.

Margamkali: St Teresa’s College, Ernakulam.

Light Music Vocal (Indian–Female): Uthara R.Krishnan of SH College, Thevara,

Other forms of classical dances: Vidhunkumar ofMar Baselius Christian College of Engineering and Technology, Peerumedu.

Kathaprasangam: Ankitha Lakshmi of St Teresa’s College, Ernakulam.

Wind Instrument (Eastern): Gopika Krishna of Saintgits College of Engineering, Pathamuttom.

Students from a total of 168 colleges, including self-financing professional colleges, affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University have participated in the youth festival.

The five-day youth festival will come to close with the Kathakali contest on Sunday. Leader of the Opposition, V.S.Achuthanandan, will inaugurate the valedictory meeting to be held at the main venue at Dr

Geevarghese Mar Osthathios Nagar (Municipal Stadium) on Sunday afternoon.

Students who stood first in various competitions will perform at the cultural evening to be followed.
