The government has constituted a Unified Command under the Chief Minister as suggested by the Union Government to contain the spread of left wing extremism in the State.
Besides the Chief Minister, the Chief Secretary, State Police Chief, Additional Chief Secretary, Home and Vigilance,
Education, Social Justice, Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe Development, Finance, Additional Director General of Police, Intelligence, Inspector General of Police, Kannur range, Inspector General, CRPF, Deputy Director, Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau, Thiruvananthapuram and Superintendent of Police, Railways are the members of the Unified Command.
The Unified Command will meet at least once in six months or as required. The Command’s task is to effectively deal with left wing extremism and to focus on the operation against the its sympathisers as well as a forum to review the development activities in the affected areas in the State.
Stating the formation of the Unified Command in the Assembly on Monday, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the Unified Command had been set up on January 17.
The House was informed that Maoist activities had been reported from the northern districts of the State and areas habitated by Adivasis. Personnel in police stations in the affected areas had been given special training, the Chief Minister said.
