The United Democratic Front (UDF) on Thursday criticised Governor P. Sathasivam for his inaction on University College developments and for being a mute spectator when the credibility of the University of Kerala and Kerala Public Service Commission was facing erosion following new disclosures related to university examinations and recruitments.

Capacity as Chancellor

Addressing a press conference here after a UDF meeting on Thursday, Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala, accompanied by senior coalition leaders, said the UDF had approached the Governor seeking his intervention in his capacity as Chancellor of the University and the appointing authority of the PSC.

“We sought the Governor’s intervention since we were convinced that the government will not handle matters in a fair manner as it is going all out to protect criminals and accused. Can the Governor be a mute spectator to the reports of widespread corruption in conduct of examinations and recruitments,” the Leader of the Opposition said.

He said the UDF expected the Governor to exercise powers vested in him officially and constitutionally to safeguard the credibility of the University of Kerala and PSC. This was not an issue between the Governor and the State government.

Mr. Chennithala said the developments in the varsity and the PSC indicated that it was a fit case for the Vice Chancellor and the PSC chairman to resign from their posts.
