The mini-stadium owned by the Pulikkal grama panchayat at Kottappuram, near Kondotty, on Tuesday afternoon witnessed a unique mass gathering of adolescent girls. Together, the 3,000-odd girls in the age group of 11 and 18 years sang a song, sending home the message of fearlessness.

The mass singing of adolescent girls, titled ‘They Are Singing,’ was conducted jointly by the Department of Social Justice and the Pulikkal panchayat.

The organisers claimed that the programme was the first of its kind in the country and that it would help equip the girls with courage and confidence.

Inaugurating the function, Minister for Social Justice M.K. Muneer called upon the youth to come forward to understand and utilise the schemes offered by the government.

“The youth can wake up a society which is in slumber. The words of the youth are valued in society, and they can inspire it,” Dr. Muneer said.

Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) units under the Social Justice Department spearheaded the mass singing programme. Girls between 11 and 18 years of age from the panchayat took part in the programme. Sub-Collector from Tirur Adila Abdulla and writers Maina Umaiban and Shabna Ponnad inspired the girls with their messages.

ICDS supervisor Shajita Attasseri, who coordinated the event, said the mass singing was aimed at not only inculcating a feeling of togetherness and unity, but also instilling pride, good citizenship, and communal amity.
