The Students Federation of India (SFI) will use social network Facebook for holding an online protest on June 16 against the delay in supplying school textbooks.

Announcing this at a press conference here on Saturday, SFI State secretary M. Vijin said that the ‘Facebook protest’ was being held to allow the larger public, including non-resident Keralites, to participate in the agitation against the government’s educational policies and the police action against agitating students.

He said that the SFI would open a Facebook page for the protest. The page would contain all details relating to the delay in issuing the textbooks, he said. The public could join the protest by clicking the ‘like’ option or writing comments, he added.

The SFI leader also said that the organisation would organise a one-day dharna on July 15 in all district headquarters to protest over the textbook issue. Over 200 SFI activists who had participated in the protest in different parts of the State over the issue suffered injuries in the police action and were admitted to various hospitals, he said adding that 40 students had been arrested in connection with the protest.

The SFI wanted the government to order a comprehensive inquiry into the textbook issue and the alleged corruption involved in printing the books in a private press, he said. Calling for an independent inquiry into the issue, he said that that the inquiry by the Chief Secretary-headed team was not acceptable. He also demanded withdrawal of police cases registered against SFI activists for participating in the agitation.
