M.V. Jayarajan, Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader and chairman of the co-operative society controlling the Pariyaram Medical Colllege, has said that the government takeover of the college will not be opposed if all the existing employees working in the institution are absorbed as government employees.

When contacted, Mr. Jayarajan told The Hindu on Friday that if the State government was taking over the medical college under the co-operative sector to make it a government medical college such as the Kozhikode Medical College, there would not be any opposition. He said that there was precedence of the government taking over private institutions. Earlier, in an interview to a private TV channel, the CPI(M) leader said that the party would not oppose the takeover of the college if the government released a special grant for the college and its employees were turned into government staff.

Mr. Jayarajan also told The Hindu that any move to hand over the administration of the medical college to the 'corrupt' previous director board of the co-operative society would be strongly opposed.

If the government was planning to disband the existing director board to re-instate the old director board, the people would resist that move, he added.

The United Democratic Front (UDF) high-power committee recently decided to recommend to the State Government to take over the Pariyaram and Kochi cooperative medical colleges.

As many as 1,952 workers are employed in seven institutions controlled by the Kerala State Co-operative Hospital Complex and Centre for Advanced Medical Sciences including the Academy of Medical Sciences (medical college), Dental College, College of Pharmacy, Paramedical College, Nursing College and a public school.
