The district administration has assured that it will take steps to measure the land areas on the banks of the Kuppam river here and to utilise the river management fund for the protection of river.
The assurance was offered by District Collector P. Bala Kiran when he received a copy of the Kuppam river protection project document, prepared by the Kerala Institute of Local Administration (KILA) from KILA Director on June 20.
An official press release here informed that the KILA Director was told by the Collector that the possibility of getting financial assistance for the river protection initiative by including it as a project under the Integrated Watershed Management Project would also be examined.
The Kuppam river protection project was drawn up by the KILA in association with the local bodies through which the river passes. According to the project, the river that passes through Udayagiri, Alakkode, Chapparappadavu, Pariyaram, Pattuvam, Ezhome, and Madayi panchayats, and the Taliparamba municipality is facing threats from contamination and encroachment.
