The number of Influenza A (H1N1) cases has recorded an increase in the district. In all, 40 H1N1 cases have been reported in the district so far this year. Of this, two persons died. The Health officials fear the number may increase once the monsoon intensifies.

The Health department has issued instructions to the public to take precautions against H1N1. Persons with suspected H1N1 symptoms, including fever, cough and breathlessness, should consult the doctor immediately, the officials said. They should not travel and avoid contact with aged persons, children and pregnant women to prevent possible transmission of infection.

Strict warning has been issued against self-medication. The flu virus spreads from person to person when infected people cough or sneeze. People have been advised to wash hands often and avoid crowded places.

The Health department is also worried about the possible increase in dengue fever cases this year. The department has said that persons who had been infected with dengue fever once had higher chances of being infected again. The second infection would be stronger than the first one, the doctors alerted.

Officials have asked people to keep surroundings clean and to destroy the breeding grounds of mosquitoes. Monsoon-related diseases that spread through mosquitoes and rats include dengue, chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis and leptospirosis. The department has begun pre-monsoon cleaning drive in the district. Regular screening camps for diseases such as filariasis and malaria are also being conducted at work sites of migrant labourers.
