District suffers loss of ₹2,014 crore in the floods

The inter-ministerial Central team, which visited flood affected areas in the district, has promised maximum support for the State’s efforts at rebuilding.

“It was the worst floods that the State witnessed in the century. The Centre is with the State’s rebuilding efforts and will provide all help,” said Yogesh Suri, Advisor, NITI Aayog, of the team. The team lauded the State government and the Thrissur district administration for the excellent relief works.

The district suffered a loss of ₹2,014 crore in the floods, said District Collector T.V. Anupama.

The team first visited the relief camp at V.R. Puram near Chalakudy. They interacted with 44 members of the camp. They then visited Chalakudy Taluk Hospital, which suffered extensive damage in the floods.

The 125-year-old hospital, which recently secured the National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS) certification by the Union Health Ministry, lost everything to the floods, suffering a loss of more than ₹22 crore.

Crop loss

The team reviewed crop loss in Kadukutty panchayat. They visited the drinking water purification plant of Kerala Water Authority and the hanging bridge at Vainthala. They visited damaged houses in the area, Arattupuzha village, which suffered heavy loss when the Karivannurpuzha changed course, Ambedkar relef camp at Pallissery and Pandarachira Colony.

The Central team also visited Kuranchery, where 19 persons were killed in a landslip, and the Cheerakuzhy dam.
