Heavy rain lashed Idukki district on Monday, with Devikulam taluk receiving the highest rainfall of 77.4 mm.

The rain triggered a landslip that destroyed a hotel at Adimaly. A person who was injured in the incident was admitted to the Adimaly Taluk Hospital. The police said earth caved in and a portion of the hotel collapsed.

Water level in the Idukki reservoir rose to 50% of its capacity. The water level on Monday was 2,354.42 ft compared to the 2,315.48 ft on the same day last year. An official of the Dam Monitoring and Research Station, Vazhathoppe, said there was a notable fall in power generation at the Moolamattom power house of the reservoir. It fell to 1.156 mu on Monday.

On Sunday, the power generation was 3.916 mu. There was considerable fall in power consumption as heavy rain continued throughout the State, he said. There was heavy inflow of water in the Periyar and other tributaries though the water level increased slowly. The official said as the reservoir area widens with the increase of water level, the rate of rise would fall. The storage level this season was above normal with the arrival of early monsoon.

On Monday Idukki taluk got 66.8 mm rainfall, Peerumade taluk 48 mm, and Thodupuzha taluk, 45.8 mm. Udumbanchola taluk recorded the lowest rainfall of 24.2 mm.
