Several policemen have recently made the news for all the wrong reasons.

The latest is a group of policemen from a police station in Ernakulam Rural allegedly abusing a 17-year-old girl in connivance with her father. The incident came to light when the girl’s mother on Wednesday approached the acting chairperson of the Kerala State Human Rights Commission P. Mohandas with a complaint in this direction.

Based on the complaint, the chairperson directed the Superintendent of Police (SP), Ernakulam Rural, to register a case under provisions of the Domestic Violence Prevention Act and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The SP has been also directed to take the girl into custody and hand her over to the Mahilamandiram or the Children’s Home, run by the Social Justice Department.

Besides, the SP has been also directed to register a crime case and investigate the same with a police officer not below the rank of deputy superintendent. The SP should personally monitor the investigation.

The woman, a native of Thurvaoor in Angamaly, filed a complaint in this direction after meeting the KSHRC chairperson at his camp office in Ernakulam. As per the complaint, the woman’s husband used to assault her and her daughter under the influence of alcohol.

The demands by the complainant included lodging of a criminal case against the husband and taking possession of the minor victim.
