T.K. Chandrashekharan, professor and Head of the General Medicine Department at Pariyaram Medical College here, died in a hospital in Chennai early on Friday. He was 61.

Dr. Chandrashekharan breathed his last at the hospital where he underwent heart surgery, medical college authorities here said. He is survived by his wife, A.V. Asha, of the Ophthalmology Department at the medical college, and two children.

Dr. Chandrashekharan had joined the medical college immediately after it was started and served as its first Medical Superintendent.

The medical college authorities said Dr. Chandrashekharan, before joining the medical college, had served as physician at District Hospital here. Hailing from Neeleswaram in Kasaragod district, he had been living at Puthiyatheru for the past several years. The body would be brought on Friday night. It would be kept at the medical college for public viewing on Saturday morning before being taken to Neeleswaram for cremation.

A resource person in the medical field, Dr. Chandrashekharan had been a familiar face in classes organised for students in the region on medical education. He had been one of the panellists in the guidance-cum-orientation programme organised by The Hindu-EducationPlus here on June 9 last year.
