P. Jayarajan has been re-elected district secretary of the CPI(M) by the three-day district conference of the party that concluded here on Monday.

The 66-year-old CPI(M) leader from Kathirur here had in November faced the party State committee’s censure for his alleged ‘self-glorification.’ His re-election is seen as a testimony to the overwhelming support he enjoys among the party cadre in the district.

He has been at the helm of the CPI(M) in the district since December 2010 when he was elevated as acting secretary of the district unit after P. Sasi was relieved of the post. In the 2012 CPI(M) district conference at Payyannur Mr. Jayarajan was formally elected to the post. He was again elected as district secretary in the 2015 district conference.

Mr. Jayarajan entered politics during his student days as an SFI worker. He had been elected to the Assembly from the Koothuparamba constituency thrice.

Meanwhile, a massive public meeting marked the conclusion of CPI(M) district meeting. The event included a ‘red volunteer’ rally in which thousands of party workers took part. Jawahar Stadium, the main venue of the meet, was teeming with party workers and Red Volunteers right from the afternoon.

Addressing the rally, Chief Minister and CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Pinarayi Vijayan said the communist movement in the district carried on the legacy of the party’s early struggles against its opponents, including the Congress and the Sangh Parivar.

Mr. Vijayan accused the Congress of compromising with communal forces in the country.
