This year’s Kaliyattom celebrations at Bhagavathi Temple at Kaliyattamukku, near Tirurangadi, were held on Friday. People from different places of Malappuram and Kozhikode district gathered for the festival held on the last Friday of the Malayalam month of Edavam.

Kaliyattom is held annually as a festival of agriculture. It has widely been considered a festival of seed procurement for the farmers getting ready for the upcoming monsoon. Groups of devotees from different parts of the district proceeded to Kaliyattamukku in vehicles, carrying Poikuthira (symbolic horse) made of coconut leaves and bamboo.

The processions halted near the Muttiyara, near Thalappara, and paid homage at the graves of Muttiyara martyrs resting at the mosque graveyard.
