As many as 11 houses were destroyed and another 156 houses damaged in Cherthala taluk due to cyclonic storm Gaja.

Officials said that majority of the houses affected were in Thycattusserry panchayat. At least 92 houses sustained damages in the panchayat after the storm wrecked havoc in the region on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday.

The areas including Poochakkal, Ezhupunna, Panavally and Pattanakkad bore the brunt of the storm. Agriculture in large tracts have been destroyed in these areas. The building of Manappuram St. Theresa’s High School has suffered damages.

Poles damaged

Several electricity poles and transformer units were damaged after trees fell on them. Officials said that steps had been taken to replace the damaged electricity poles and restore power supply in the region. “We are on the process of estimating the damage caused by the storm. A large number of houses and others buildings have been affected. Our immediate priority is to restore electricity, traffic and water supply.. Majority of the roads have been cleared and water supply restored in most of the areas,” said an official.
