A tree fell on a house in Adhingapettu at Bahour here following rain and strong winds after Cyclone Gaja made a landfall near Vedaranniyam in Tamil Nadu early on Friday. However, there was no major damage life and property in the city. Another tree crashed on the premises of the office of tahasildar at Bahour.
Fire Service personnel said trees were uprooted at Romain Rolland, Kandappa Mudaliar and Bussy Streets following rain and gusty wind on Thursday night.
According to an official in the Disaster Management Authority, Cyclone Gaja did not have much impact in Puducherry region as expected. As there was less rainfall, inundation was not reported from any area in Puducherry.
After holding a meeting with officials on Friday, Minister for Public Works A. Namassivayam said Puducherry region did not have any damage because of cyclone. There were reports of trees getting uprooted at 11 places, he said.
Heavy damage
There was heavy damage to property in Karaikal region. The cyclone left many electricity poles damaged, trees flattened and houses damaged in Karaikal. Power supply had been completely disrupted in the region, he said.
A 30-member team from the Electricity Department had reached the Karaikal region to restore power supply, he said.
