Dialysis unit shut down following saltwater intrusion

Effort to restore functioning of eight gadgets by Saturday

Functioning of the dialysis unit at the General Hospital here, which has eight gadgets, was disrupted following intrusion of saline water to the reverse osmosis plant that is part of the gadgets, affecting at least 25 patients.

The trouble came to the notice of the authorities on Saturday after two dialysis units were shut down for want of clean water.

Kasaragod town by and large rely on Kerala Water Authority that draws water from the Bavikkara check-dam across the Chandragiri river. However, residents are forced to use the saline water entering the network because of high tide.

Meanwhile, following the snag developed in the two machines, the hospital authorities opted to suspend services of all the eight dialysis units. Efforts are under way to restore their functioning by Saturday by taking special efforts to use water drawn from wells to clean the reverse osmosis plant that requires 250 litres of water each for performing dialysis on a patient, a senior hospital official told The Hindu .
