Six Communist Party of India (Marxist) workers sustained injuries in an attack allegedly unleashed by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) workers at Koyilandy on Sunday night.

The police said the CPI(M) workers were attacked while they were watching television at a local library in Koyilandy around 9 p.m.

CPI(M) leaders said the six persons, including a municipal councillor and the local secretary of the party, were assaulted using lethal weapons.

The gang also vandalised the branch office of the party at Puliyancheri and the KTS memorial library.

Hartal observed

Condemning the incident, the CPI(M) observed a hartal in Koyilandy on Monday. Though shops remained closed till evening, the hartal did not affect the long distance bus services on the Kozhikode-Kannur route.

The police said they registered 11 separate cases on the basis of the complaints filed by the victims and other residents at Puliyanchery, where around 12 houses were vandalised. The reason behind the attack was unknown, they said.

No serious injuries

Hospital sources said none of CPI(M) workers suffered serious injuries in the incident and they were all discharged on Monday.
