Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala has welcomed the stance of the Nair Service Society (NSS) that it will not either form a political party or be part of any political alliance.
Speaking to the media here on Saturday, Mr. Chennithala said the NSS stance would go a long way in strengthening the secular fabric of society. “The declaration was timely and dignified,” he said.
The Home Minister was referring to the declaration made by NSS general secretary G. Sukumaran Nair on the occasion of the Vijayadasami Nair Sammelan at Perunna on Friday.
‘Divisive agenda’
Mr. Chennithala said all right-thinking persons were apprehensive about the move on the part of the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam to form a casteist political party as it was part of the divisive agenda of the BJP to divide society on caste and communal lines.
However, the new formation would not affect the UDF in the local body elections, he said.
Dubbing the local body elections as a semi-finals before the Assembly polls, Mr. Chennithala said the elections would be a stocktaking on the UDF rule in the State.
‘No pact outside coalition’
Reacting to a question, he said the UDF had not entered into any alliance outside the coalition as done by the LDF.
“Our base is intact. Only when you fear an erosion of your vote base that you co-opt people from outside the coalition,” he said.
