The city corporation on Friday began evicting street vendors ahead of the National Games.

The vendors from the footpaths at North Bus Stand, Aswini Junction and Palace Road were evicted on Friday.

According to traders, though the corporation had promised to rehabilitate 300-odd vendors, who were evicted from Sakthan Nagar two years ago, the offer still remains on paper.

Rising concerns

The Mayor had recently expressed concern at the increasing number of unlicensed vendors in the city.

Instances of vendors encroaching upon footpaths had gone up at Sakthan Nagar, Post Office Road and North Bus Stand.

According to the corporation officials, notices were issued to the traders in advance. The encroachments at Swaraj Round were removed last week. The eviction drive is being carried out with the support of the police.
